CarbCred Africa works closely with government institutions and local organizations to implement sustainable, economically beneficial programs and drive policy change.
Key Local Partnerships in Conservation
CarbCred has established relationships with crucial Zimbabwean entities responsible for managing large tracts of land and protecting vital ecosystems:
• Forestry Commission (FC): The FC is a parastatal operating under the Ministry of Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry. Its core responsibilities include the regulation, management, and conservation of forest resources. The FC manages gazetted indigenous forests which account for approximately 0.8% of the country’s total surface area.
• Zimbabwe Parks & Wildlife Management Authority (ZPWMA): As the successor to the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Management, the ZPWMA manages one of the largest estates in the country. This estate covers roughly 5 million hectares of land, or 13% of Zimbabwe’s total land area, and falls under the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Tourism and Hospitality Industry.
• Harare Wetlands Trust: This organization is an umbrella trust incorporating Civil Society Organizations, Community Based Organizations, and concerned individuals dedicated to promoting the conservation of Harare’s Wetland Ecosystems. Their goal is to ensure the sustainable provisioning of water for the Greater Harare region.
Driving Policy and Community Benefits
Beyond conservation partnerships, CarbCred focuses on two critical areas: policy influence and direct community impact:
1. Government Partnerships and Taxation: CarbCred aims to provide policy solutions and framework development in conjunction with Government institutions. A key initiative is encouraging and implementing a carbon taxation initiative. This initiative seeks to involve major local corporations in the fight towards the sequestration of carbon emissions generated within their respective industries.
2. Community Development: Recognizing the importance of equitable benefits, CARBCRED AFRICA strives to create Carbon Finance Initiative (CFI) programs through carbon credit markets. These programs are specifically designed to benefit low-income communities based across Africa.
